Journalist of the Year Portfolio

Broadcast Journalism

My journey into journalism started with video production. As a third grader, I started a YouTube channel and made silly videos with my friend. Eventually they became somewhat polished “vlogs” about my daily life. During the COVID pandemic, I started documenting how my life and how others’ lives changed. I interviewed community members and business owners about COVID’s impacts.

My first year in high school, I joined video production program and created news packages for our monthly show. We also produced a documentary.

The Last True State Champions: The Story of the 1997 BHSN Boys Basketball State Champions

Documentary, May 2023

I directed this full-length documentary, produced by the advanced video production class I was in. We interviewed nearly all the players on the team that won the state championship in 1997, as well as the head coach, who was, at first, quite reluctant to participate in this project.

This project taught me organization skills. We had to plan and coordinate countless interviews, cull and ingest hours of footage, involving two cameras per interview, and source archived photos. And of course I learned teamwork—working with the group of students on a large-scale project that took most of the spring semester.

How the BHSN Yearbook is Made

Feature, Oct. 2022

My first project for our video production program was this short feature showcasing the yearbook staff. Having just entered high school, I was very intrigued by the process and wanted to somehow get involved. I used this project to do just that.

The video originally included a segment following a staffer photographing a football game. She walked through her thinking as she chose angles and shots. However, the final video was too long, so we ended up cutting that section.

The North Star

Executive Producer, 2022-23

My freshman year, I executive produced our school’s monthly video production, The North Star. It was shown to all students during homeroom.

I worked with the class to plan and produce segments, and then I filmed the host, then edited them all together. The segments were news packages covering events in and around our school. Being involved in this as a freshman helped me get to know the school community quickly.
